Introduction

It was pouring rain the day my brother, Kolton Bennett, was cremated. My husband, Clement Wright, never showed up. He was busy accepting an award for saving civilians trapped in a fire—the same fire where he'd failed to save Kolton. After that, I stopped worrying about the dangers of Clement's job. I no longer stared at my phone with my heart lodged in my throat, waiting to hear he was safe. Clement always said wearing the uniform meant he had a duty to the public. For that duty, he had left me stranded on roadsides, abandoned me at the altar, forgotten me outside operating rooms, and eventually, sacrificed my brother. A week after Kolton died, Clement finally came home. But he wasn't alone. Lenora Schultz—his first love—was right behind him. "Mauri, Lena is staying for a few days," he told me. Lenora's eyes were red and swollen, but there was something defiant lurking beneath them. "Maureen, I hope I'm not imposing..." she said. Before, I would have exploded. But now, I felt nothing at all. "The guest room is empty. Stay there." Clement grabbed my wrist, looking stunned. "You aren't going to ask why? A pipe burst at her apartment, so I—" I pulled my hand away. "Just another mouth to feed. No big deal. Keep her here as long as you want."

Lenora Schultz—his first love—was right behind him.

"Mauri, Lena is staying for a few days," he told me.

Lenora's eyes were red and swollen, but there was something defiant lurking beneath them.

"Maureen, I hope I'm not imposing..." she said.
