Chapter 1: I Won’t Marry You
The scenery was both familiar and unfamiliar. A cold wind blew, pelting bean-sized raindrops and blurring the car window. Sharon looked out with a mixture of curiosity and nervousness.
The scenery had changed, and so had she.
It had been three years. The face reflected in the window of the car was no longer the round mix of baby fat and a comfortable diet. Instead, her extremely thin face didn’t even have an inch of extra muscle. Her slender eyebrows curved around her lean and waxy face, emphasizing the years of malnutrition and drawing the eye down to the scattered freckles across the bridge of her nose.
“How have you been these past few years?” The face of the man seated beside her was cloaked in shadows. He gently rubbed his fingers down the buttons on his front. His voice sounded more like he was interrogating a prisoner than asking out of kindness.
